2012 Spa Trends and Opportunities

The Miraval Experience

We had the unique opportunity to interview Michael Tompkins, President of Miraval Resorts and a respected leader in the spa and health industry. He will be a keynote speaker at the Esthétique SPA International Conference in Las Vegas April 15 – 16, 2012. Register today.

Q: How did you get your start in the spa industry?

I began my career as a Registered Nurse, and after nearly twelve years of disappointment in traditional western medicine, I transitioned to spa as Nursing Director at Canyon Ranch in the Berkshires.  I went to Massage School during my tenure there.  I then worked myself up the industry ladder and know I’ve found my calling as President of Miraval Resorts.  I view my role in all the jobs in my career as taking care of people.

Q: What will the greatest challenges be for the spa industry in 2012?

I believe the number of spas in the US will continue to decline and as a result, the remaining number will need to strengthen.  Because of the economy many quality licensed professionals like massage therapists have sought out other careers which will impact operations in difficulty finding qualified staff.  The rapid expansion of spa in Asia will drive western spa consultants to migrate there.

Q: What are the most relevant trends you see impacting the spa industry in 2012?

Because of high levels of stress in the general world population spa goers will continue to seek relief with spa services.  The blending of wellness and spa will continue, not with spas adding wellness facilities but wellness facilities adding spa components.  This will put additional stressors on finding educated, quality staff.  As Asian and Indian spas advance, I see more services blending modalities from those areas into global practices.
